Edwin Arnold

British poet and journalist, Sir Edwin Arnold was born on June 10th, 1832 and educated at King’s School, Rochester; King’s College, London; and University College, Oxford. He later went to India and worked as principal of the Government Sanskrit College at Poona. In 1861, he returned to England and worked as journalist on the staff of The Daily Telegraph, a newspaper with which he continued to be associated for more than 40 years. Arnold authored many works. His principal volumes of poetry included The Light of Asia (1879), The Light of the World (1891), Indian Song of Songs (1875), Pearls of the Faith (1883), The Song Celestial (1885), and Adzuma (1893). He received decorations from the rulers of England, Japan, Persia, Turkey, and Siam. Suffering from failing eyesight in his later years, Sir Edwin Arnold, died on March 24th, 1904.
