DOES GOD LOVE WAR?
THE FINE LINE BETWEEN FAITH AND FANATICISM

Donate $60.00 and get a free copy of the program, “Does God Love War? The Fine Line Between Faith and Fanaticism featuring Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, a prominent Muslim scholar in the West, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Chris Hedges. The event was hosted by the Zaytuna Institute in Berkeley, California, on March 11, 2006.

Zaytuna now offers its friends and supporters a DVD copy of this program as a complimentary gift during our current fund-drive. All proceeds will be used to host programs of this nature and support the ongoing work of Zaytuna.  As part of its mission, Zaytuna brings together intellectuals from different cultural backgrounds and religions to discuss and debate contemporary topics. Through such events, and through its journal Seasons, Zaytuna hopes to provide a public forum for scholars, academics, artists, activists, and students to voice their insights, concerns, reflections, and aspirations for the world.

ZAYTUNA INVITES YOU TO SUPPORT THIS MISSION

“Does God Love War”: Have the teachers of our religions failed us? Or have we not been listening? From leaders of America’s Christian Right seemingly forgetting that “Blessed are the Peacemakers,” to Jewish rabbis watching unflinchingly as collective punishment is doled out to Arabs in Palestine, to Muslim jurists ruling that civilian victims are acceptable under a Just War, the three great Abrahamic faiths are increasingly facing accusations of ignoring the sanctity of life. And so, does religion offer a way toward reconciliation? Or has it instead become part of the problem? This remarkable event brought together two speakers highly qualified to address these burning issues. The son of a Presbyterian minister, Chris Hedges has been one of America’s most distinguished war correspondents, and his reflections about religion have become as important to America’s public debate as his previous work on war. Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, meanwhile, has been studying traditional religion, and Islam in particular, for the better part of the last quarter century. Since the attacks on 9/11, he has emerged as one of America’s most eloquent and thoughtful Muslim voices, and is especially known for his fluid familiarity with scholarship from both the East and the West.
