Zaytuna's Policy Prescription For Determining the Start of Islamic Months
By Zaytuna Institute

1. Zaytuna Institute does not endorse using our position on this issue as the basis for discrediting or belittling the opinions and arguments of other Muslims.

2. We will use our resources, in coordination with other concerned parties, to establish a network of credible moon-sighting committees for North America, or to strengthen existing committees. We will assist in training and coordinating such committees.

3. We will announce the first day of the month of Ramadan and all subsequent lunar months on our website. We will also encourage all concerned parties to look for this information on www.hilalbase.com, and other credible sources. We also encourage the formation of a national website that is sponsored by all of our various communities to help them fulfill time-based obligations.

4. We urge all Muslims in North America to adopt a confirmed North American moon-sighting as the basis for establishing the beginning of our lunar month, and to begin moving beyond this contentious issue, which has plagued our community for the past three decades.

5. We urge Muslims to use the calculations as a basis for determining when to look and where to look, and as a criterion for rejecting unfounded claims of sighting the new moon, which are not multiply-transmitted from many places.

6. We urge moving towards the establishment of a national Islamic authority that can credibly guide the Muslim community in a way that is rooted in traditional Islamic scholarship and allows for the full input of the diverse elements that makeup the community, indigenous and immigrant.

7. We will continue to research this issue and develop accessible knowledge resources to assist the Muslims in understanding and educating others on this issue.

8. We urge our leaders and imams to educate our communities on the reasons for difference and that the essential nature of our religion is a celebration of unity through diversity, not through uniformity. The tension that is created over differences of opinion should be used creatively, as an impetus for investigating our positions with rigor and open-mindedness, and with a willingness to change them in the light of stronger evidence.
